Is the Escape Free® harness truly escape free?

Gooby Escape Free® harnesses has a patented design that can significantly reduce or even eliminate the risk of a dog escaping, particularly dogs that have a tendency to pull by backing up. However, it should be noted that no harness can prevent escape 100% of the time. Any dog, with sustained determination or sudden and unexpected movements may still be able to escape. In order for the harness to be at its most effective, please consider the following important instructions and guidance.

Sizing

Sizing are critical when it comes to our Escape Free® harnesses. Please make sure to measure your dog's chest and use the provided size chart to select the correct size. If a harness is too big or too small, the risk of escape will remain. See also: Selecting the correct harness size

If your dog seems to be in-between sizes and you are uncertain about which size to select, please contact Gooby Customer Support for guidance.

Fit

When using your Escape Free® harness, please know that the rubber sliders are designed to restrict how much the harness opens. When the harness is on and the attached least is not activated, there should only be enough room for the width of one finger between the back of the dog and the harness buckle. And when the harness is activated by the leash, there should be no space between the harness and the dog's back. If there is excess room in either case, the harness may be too large for your dog and there will be a risk of escaping.

Additionally, if the harness is too small, the rubber sliders will not open up enough for that space between the harness and the dog. This will cause the harness to crush the dog rather than hug it as it is designed. This will cause not only discomfort for the dog, it will significantly impact the Escape Free functionality.

Proper Vigilance

Please continue to be vigilant even when using a Escape Free® harness, as certain movements of either the dog or owner can cause space to open up in the harness, which will create escape risk.

Test First

It is highly recommended that you test your Escape Free® harness on your dog in an enclosed space before taking out into the open. This will ensure that the size is correct and help dog and owner become comfortable with the harness.

Use Limits

When using the Escape Free® harness, please don't tie your dog to an immovable object, e.g. pole, fire hydrant, table legs. The Escape Free® Functionality will not work because there is no active pulling, which is required for proper function.

Fur/Coats

If your dog has a thicker coat or a hair covering, please consider that the harness needs to be snug to the skin of the dog, regardless of concerns about hair/coat flattening or matting.

  • Biting/Chewing: This harness is not designed to withstand sustained chewing or biting, which will compromise the effectiveness of the harness.
